Alfred Stieglitz’s significance as an art dealer, curator, publisher, and photographer makes him one of the most influential people in the development of modern art in America. Stieglitz was the founder and publisher of the periodical Camera Work (1903-17) a quarterly publication, that advanced Pictorialism photographers in America and eventually showcased painters, sculptors and other artists. Across its 50 issues, Camera Work would become the most important American art journal of the first half of the 20th century.
